Plastic Footprint Calculator

Table of contents

How it Works

The plastic waste footprint calculator divides your everyday consumption into neat categories:

  • Food & Kitchen Needs (PET bottles, plastic bags, yogurt containers, and food wrappers).
  • Bathroom & Laundry (cotton swabs, detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, refill packets, toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, etc.).
  • Disposable Containers & Packaging (take-away plastic boxes and cups, straws, disposable cutlery, plates).
  • Other (toys, furniture, or custom items, entered by weight).

You can also select how often you use each time: per day, week, month, or year. The personal plastic footprint calculator then uses the average weight of the items to provide you with a total annual amount of waste measured in kilograms. It also estimates your lifetime plastic footprint based on these daily habits.

Formula

The plastic use calculator uses the following principle to produce the results:

Plastic Footprint (kg/year) = (Quantity × Average weight of an item) × Frequency

Where:

  • Quantity is how many of an item you use.
  • Average weight of an item is based on standard average values (for example, a PET bottle weighs approximately 36 g,  a plastic bag – 8 g, etc.).
  • Frequency converts the result into an annual total based on your chosen rate (day, week, month, year)

All of the items are then summed up, and the calculator shows your total plastic footprint in kilograms per year and kilograms per lifetime (assuming an average of 75 years).

Example

Let’s suppose a person uses:

  • 1 PET bottle per day
  • 2 plastic bags per week
  • 1 shampoo bottle per month
  • 2 toothbrushes per year
  • 1 take-away cup per week
  • 3 straws per week

Here are some sample calculations:

  • PET bottles → 1 × 36 g × 365 = 13.1 kg/year
  • Plastic bags → 1 × 8 g × 52 = 0.83 kg/year

The personal plastic footprint calculator performs the same actions with the other items and then adds up all the values. Take a look at the results:

Total plastic footprint = 16.0712 kg/year

Lifetime footprint = 16.0712 × 75 = 1205.34 kg

As you can see, the results are always presented in kilograms for clarity.

Plastic Footprint by Category

Plastic use is not distributed evenly between different types of items. Some categories contribute way more to the environmental impact.

Food & Kitchen items, for instance, often make up the largest share of waste. This is mainly due to PET bottles and single-use plastic bags. People use them daily, so objects in this category add up quite quickly.

On the other hand, Bathroom & Laundry items are not as noticeable as kitchen plastics. However, since they are replaced regularly, they create a steady share of waste over time.

Lastly, the Disposable Containers & Packaging category illustrates how human convenience can lead to significant amounts of plastic waste. People use take-away boxes, straws, cups, and utensils only for a brief moment, but they can remain in the environment for decades.

FAQ

  1. What is the plastic footprint?
It is the total weight of plastic waste that a person, family, organization, or country produces in a given period of time.
  2. How accurate is the plastic footprint calculator?
This calculator uses average weights for everyday objects, such as bottles or packaging. Real items may vary in weight, but the results you see can be a reliable estimate of your plastic use over a year or a lifetime.
  3. How does the lifetime footprint work?
The tool simply multiplies the annual footprint of a person by 75 years, which is considered an average human lifespan.
  4. Can families use the calculator?
Yes, a family plastic footprint calculator works the same way. Just enter the combined usage of common items for everyone in your household.
  5. How to reduce plastic footprint?
There are a few effective strategies to achieve that. Firstly, incorporate reusable bags and bottles into your daily habits. Also, try to avoid disposable cutlery, plates, and cups. Additionally, when shopping, you can choose items with minimal packaging and buy refill products.

Your results from the plastic footprint calculator are personal to you, but don’t forget that they are part of a bigger picture. When people reduce their waste even by a few kilograms of plastic a year, the collective effort can generate a considerable change in the global environment. Try to calculate the plastic footprint of your household with this useful tool and see how you can make your daily habits less harmful to the environment.
