BMI Weight Loss Calculator

Table of contents

How It Works

The BMI weight loss calculator is divided into two sections, and each section produces its own outputs.

In the first section, you enter your height and weight. From these inputs, the calculator produces two outputs: BMI and BMI Prime. These values describe your current position. BMI shows your category, and BMI Prime shows how far you are from the upper limit of the normal range.

Then you move to the target section and enter your desired BMI. The BMI target weight calculator uses the same height to determine what your weight would be at that BMI. From there, it determines the difference between your current and target weight.

As a result, you see three outputs in the second section: target BMI Prime, target weight, and weight to gain or weight to lose. This connects your current results with your goal and shows exactly how much weight to lose, based on BMI.

Formula

The healthy weight calculator works in two stages. Each stage uses its own formulas.

First section (current values):

BMI = Weight ÷ Height²

BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25

Where:

  • Weight is your current weight in kg
  • Height is your height in m

Second section (target values):

Target BMI Prime = Target BMI ÷ 25

Target Weight = Target BMI × Height²

Weight to Gain or Lose = Target Weight – Current Weight

Where:

  • Target BMI is your selected goal
  • Height2 keeps the result proportional to your body
  • Current Weight is your actual weight in kg

Example

Let’s say a person is 175 cm tall and currently weighs 85 kg. They want to understand how much weight they need to lose to reach a healthier range, so they use the BMI goal weight calculator.

First, the calculator assesses their current condition:

BMI → 85 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 27.755

BMI Prime → 27.755 ÷ 25 = 1.11

This means their BMI is above the normal range, and the BMI Prime value confirms that it exceeds the recommended limit.

Next, they set a target BMI of 24, which falls within the healthy range. The calculator then determines:

Target BMI Prime → 24 ÷ 25 = 0.96

Target Weight → 24 × (1.75 × 1.75) = 73.5 kg

Weight to Gain or Lose → 73.5 – 85 = -11.5 kg

In this case, the result shows that they need to lose 11.5 kg to reach their target. This gives a clear and realistic goal. The result answers the question “how much weight should I lose” and helps structure a weight loss plan.

Why This Calculator is Useful

Many people know their BMI, but that number alone doesn’t tell them what to do next. This calculator solves that problem. It turns your BMI into a clear weight target.

For example, if your BMI is above the normal range, you can immediately see how much weight to lose to reach your BMI goals. If it is below, the tool shows how much weight to gain instead. This makes it more practical than a standard BMI check.

It also helps with planning. You can base your target on your height and a defined BMI value instead of setting a random goal. That gives your weight loss plan a clear direction. It also makes progress easier to track.

Furthermore, the two-section structure separates your current results from your goal. This makes it easier to understand where you are and what needs to change. This is why it works well as a target weight calculator.

FAQ

  1. How much weight to lose, based on BMI?
The BMI weight loss calculator compares your current BMI with your target BMI and converts that difference into kilograms. Instead of estimating, you can see the exact weight you need to lose or gain based on your height. This makes it much easier to set a clear and realistic goal of how much weight to lose to reach the desired BMI.
  2. What is BMI Prime, and why are there two values?
BMI Prime is your BMI divided by 25, which is the upper limit of the normal range. The first value shows your current position. The second one shows your target. By comparing both, you can understand how far you are from your goal in relative terms.
  3. Can I use this as a target weight calculator?
Yes. The second section determines your target weight directly from your chosen BMI. This gives you a defined number to work toward, which is more useful than setting a random goal without a reference.
  4. What does “weight to gain or lose” mean?
This value shows the difference between your current weight and your target weight. If the number is negative, you need to lose weight. If it is positive, you need to gain weight. The calculator presents this clearly so you can act on it without any extra calculations.
  5. Is this an ideal weight loss calculator?
It provides a structured starting point based on BMI standards. However, weight goals can also depend on factors like muscle mass, activity level, overall health, etc. That’s why this tool works best as a simple guideline.

The BMI weight loss calculator does more than show your BMI. It separates your current data and your goal into two sections with clear outputs. First, you see your BMI and BMI Prime. Then, you see your target BMI Prime, target weight, and the exact weight difference. If you want a clear answer to how much weight you should lose, try the calculator and use the results to guide your progress.
